Since November, I’ve been noticing a rather curious sight here in the U.S.
Cars driving around with large trees strapped to their roofs.

The first time I saw it, I honestly wondered,
“Where did that come from, and where is it going?”
It turns out the answer was surprisingly close to home.
At a corner of the parking lot in supermarkets and home improvement stores, real Christmas trees were being sold.
People would pick their favorite tree, strap it to the roof of their car right there, and take it home.
So those “trees on cars” were exactly what I had been seeing.
It’s not something you often see in Japan, so I was a little surprised to realize,
“Oh, in the U.S., people actually decorate with real trees.”
When you smell them, there’s a faint but pleasant natural scent,
something you don’t get with artificial trees.
As for the price, they generally go for around $60 to $70.
I found myself wanting a tree of my own, too.
