Current Situation
The ILA-USMX master contract has expired on September 30. Starting October 1, ILA initiated a strike on East and Gulf coast. Today marks the third day of the strike, and container ships are still anchored waiting to unload their cargo at major ports.
ILA is demanding an hourly wage increase of $5.00 each year, totaling $30.00 over six years. USMX made a counterproposal on September 30, which included nearly a 50% wage increase over six years, triple employer contributions to employee retirement plans, strengthen health care options, and retail the current language around automation and semi-automation. However, ILA rejected this proposal and proceed with the stirke.
Impacts on Logistics
Steamship lines plan to impose additional surcharges on containers bound for East and Gulf coast due to increased costs associated with delays caused by the strike. For vessels on East and Gulf coast, it is uncertain when the containers will be unloaded. Even after strike ends, it will take considerable time to clear the backlog. A one-week strike is expected to require until mid-November to resolve the congestion.
